‘What if’ fine art print is the original digital sketch used to create the large painting ‘What if’ for the exhibition from the artists’ association St. Lucas in Amsterdam. According to legend, St. Lucas, the patron saint of painters and carvers, painted a portrait of Mary and Jesus from life, which became known as the icon ‘Hodegetria’. The ‘black Madonna’ (source: ‘Wikipedia) is said to give a true picture of what Mary looked like. This work was created especially for the exhibition, in the traditionally Jewish neighborhood in the Dokzaal, inspired by these stories.

A controversial work that draws attention to well-trodden paths and patterns. Truths, prejudices and beliefs. According to the stories, Jesus would have a Jewish background. This could mean that the ‘white’ image that is so familiar might not be correct. By portraying a dark-skinned Mary with child, Eva creates a completely different image than is known. The text that accompanies the image is intended to stimulate and make you think.

Text: ‘What if the cover changes. Would it change the book? And therefore your truth?’
