A beginning.
Drawn to her marked an early chapter in my practice. I was drawn to women who seemed to hold different things at once: strength and vulnerability, confidence and uncertainty, stillness and defiance.
At Galerie NAT in Zaandam, these portraits were brought together on a larger scale for the first time. Small, intimate works hung alongside monumental paintings, allowing the same female presence to move between intimacy and scale.
Looking back, I recognise in these works the beginning of something that still runs through my practice today: an ongoing fascination with portraiture, identity and the stories carried by the people I portray.
