Description
According to legend, it was St. Luke, the patron saint of painters and sculptors, who saw Mary in his dream. He painted her and the baby Jesus. His work later became known as the icon: “Hodegetria,” or “the Black Madonna.” This work was created especially for an exhibition with the artists’ association St. Luke in Amsterdam.
With the story of St. Luke as inspiration, I used the back of the canvas, the rough, non-white side, to create the work. Mary, a mother, breastfeeding her child. What if? What if the story is different from what you’ve known so far? Would anything change then? Would it change how you see the world and others?
The artwork is currently on long-term display at the Oude Jeroenskerk in Noordwijk. Contact us for exhibition possibilities. A limited edition fine art print of the original sketch is also available.
Size artwork 215×400 cm without the wooden frame. With frame the work comes to 5 meters high.
The artwork is featured in ‘Jaarboek Kunstenaars 2026’
